Personal storage of all one’s media throughout a lifetime has been desired and discussed since at least 1945, when Vannevar Bush published As We May Think, positing the “Memex” device “in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility.”
